Undara Lava Tubes

The Undara Volcanic National Park is 275km south west of Cairns. This park has one of the longest flows of lava originating from a single volcano, The ‘Undara’. We booked a tour and they drive you out to the lava tube, there is an amazing arch on the way in where the roof of the tube has collapsed. You get to go into two of the lava tubes and walk along the boardwalks. The Stephenson tube still had some water in it and it was an amazing aqua blue. Apparently scientists who go deeper into the tubes have to wear breathing apparatus as the content of carbon dioxide in the tubes can be as high as 9%.

This was a brilliant tour, very informative. Lots of bats in there too. To top it all off when we were about to leave 5 emus came strolling past!
