The Lakes, Quilpe

The Lakes is an 2,500 acre outback station running Merino sheep, beef cattle and Kalahari red goats.

It is on the edge of Lake Houdraman. This campsite set up was excellent. They have each site separated with native trees and a ‘Lakeview pub’ which is what they call their bar. At 5pm they ring the bell to get all the campers up for a drink. There are two resident emus and a joey on the property. Excellent facilities here and you could buy goat curries made from their own goats, Simon tried one which was very good.

I went on a beautiful walk around the lake where they have marked the local trees to show you the route but also to tell you about the local flora. Great bird life on the lake, I spent ages watching them. They had pelicans, Richards pipit, Brolgas and lots of others I couldn’t begin to name.

A very relaxing site despite it being a working farm.

On one of the days they were separating the goats, the very small kids vs teenage kids from the nanny goats. What a racket, the baby kids literally sound like babies with all their bleating. It was a very long process. The teenage kids were being taken 50km up the road to another pasture as they were old enough to look after themselves now. Eventually the nannies were put back with the smaller kids and went off towards the lake. It was an all day event and they cried and cried.

Every sunset was brilliant setting over the lake.
