This is a very sombre place. It’s the historic site of a penal settlement in the 1830’s where convicts were put to work cutting timber. The remains of the old buildings can be seen and the old asylum where prisoners were locked up 23 hours a day and not allowed to make any noise or talk to anyone. In 1996 it was the site of a massacre where 33 people were killed. I think that was more disturbing for us as it would have been people like us on a day out and then some idiot decided to shoot everyone. There is a garden to remember those who were killed which is quite moving.
