Daintree & Cape Tribulation

We stayed at the Daintree Rainforest Village campsite a lovely spot with beautiful mountain views. It also had the added attraction of having a friendly cassowary ‘Mary’ wandering through the campsite. She is a young female and only left her Dad last year. She didn’t seem to be bothered with us taking photos. Apparently she used to come through here with her Dad as a chick and has continued to so so.

Cassowaries are solitary birds and only tolerate each other during breeding season. The female has numerous partners during the season and lays clutches of between 3-5 eggs from different fathers and then buggers off and leaves it all to the males!! He then has to incubate the eggs for approximately 50 days and during this time he will rarely eat or drink. Once hatched the Dad then rears the chicks for up to 16 months. Some chicks will stay with their fathers until the next breeding season. What a Dad, he deserves a medal.

We did a bit of a tour visited Cape Tribulation, Myall Beach and Noah’s Beach all very beautiful.

Went on a crocodile tour on Coopers Creek. We were very lucky to see a very large crocodile. He was approximately 4.5m long.  The boat trip was very well done not hassling the croc just watching from a distance, which I was very happy about. THe boat was not that big compared to the croc!

We visited the Daintree Discovery centre and climbed the tower into the rainforest canopy. You get a handheld audio information gadget so each time you got to a number on the boardwalk you punched it in and it told you all about what you were looking at. Very handy. We are still looking for tree kangaroos but didn’t see any.

To finish the day off we went to the Daintree Ice Cream shop to sample their lovely products. I had their assorted sorbets Davidson Plum, Yellow Sapote, Coconut and Mango. Yum.
