Charters Towers

Stayed at a campsite near a friend of ours – Thiruni, she lives on the next street so it was easy for us to meet up after she finished work. We had a very interesting first evening, I was outside the van cooking dinner and the guy in the cabin behind us was sitting under his awning with his mate and he was very drunk, so drunk he didn’t even know what day it was. Anyway his mate left. He then strips down to his underpants and moves his chair outside of his awning facing directly towards me.  I thought “oh, here we go another weirdo”. I ignored him and carried on. Dinner was now ready and Simon came out, he was sitting with his back to the guy. This guy then went in and then came out completely starkers and stood there hands on hips, I ignored him he then went up his ensuite steps so that he was overlooking us and just stood there. This happened about four times he kept popping out naked. What a weirdo! Talk about putting me off my dinner. Simon told him to go put on some clothes or he was going to get really pissed off, he dissappeared after that. The next morning I asked at reception had they ever had any bother with this guy and no they had not. I told them what happened and she said she would have a word. Well I think she blasted him. He turned up at the caravan very sheepish and apologised, I told him I am a middle aged woman so not fazed apart from putting me off my dinner but it would not be funny if there was a young girl staying there. He again apologised and we never saw him again for the rest of our stay. Probably too embarrassed to come out. What a welcome to Charters Towers!

Thiruni works at the Distance Education School in Charters. We went to visit and it was very odd to see school buildings with loads of teachers but no children. There are 140 teachers here and the majority of their pupils are from the Greater Brisbane region as well as others from overseas.

In the evening we headed up to Tower Hill which overlooks the whole of Charters to watch the sunset. There are lots of walks around there and it is obviously a very popular place judging by the number of people around.

Tuesday night is Trivia night at the Sovereign pub so we joined Thiruni’s team. A great quiz we didn’t win but got 10/10 on the European countries round, easy if you are from the UK. It was mostly Distance Education teachers, the place was full.

Back up Tower Hill the next evening for dinner with Thiruni and her friends before heading off to the drive through cinema. It was on my bucket list. Apparently, I have been to one before over 30 years ago according to Simon but I can’t remember it! So we went to see ‘Barbie’ which was surprisingly entertaining, it was a great night there was something quite nice about watching a movie under the starts and there was a lot of stars that night.

Headed off on Thursday after having four new tyres put on the Hilux. Need to have decent tyres for the Cape apparently.
