Betoota

Set off to Betoota via Windorah where we stopped for lunch.
There seems to be plenty of work everywhere we go. The Windorah pub is run by two guys from Ecuador. This is their second season. I think they open up when the caravanners are coming through and then when the wet season arrives everything closes.

Soon after leaving Windorah you are on an unsealed road so it was time to reset the tyre pressures. They generally tell you to lose 30-40% of the air. Had a few issues on the unsealed road, we have a braking system on the van and there were so many loose stones flicking up it must have been hitting a sensor under the van somewhere causing the brakes to come on which made the van swerve before getting it back under control. A bit scary the first time it happened.

Betoota Pub is another pub in the middle of nowhere and I mean in the middle of nowhere. There are no houses near it at all but there is an airstrip. Outside they have several old vehicles which adds to the charm of the place. The pub has its 100th birthday Aug 26th 2023.

The barman was called ‘Sauce’. It’s a tiny bar with a massive back room. Seriously no frills but very welcoming and friendly which was amazing because the Matildas were playing against England in the World Cup and Simon was the only one supporting England. After the match Sauce told Simon to ‘Piss off out of here, you pommie bastard’ with a smile.

When you visit the toilets you have a few spectators. There were about 10 tiny little frogs peeking out from behind the cistern and there were grasshoppers everywhere.

Again you can just park up for free as long as you have a drink. If you wanted to have a shower though it was $5 for 3 mins. Water is a serious commodity out here what they have in their rain tanks is it, when it runs out there is no more until the next rain.

A very enjoyable evening with lots of banter.
