Atherton Tablelands with Ed & Julie

Bonadio RV Camp and Nature Reserve

This is a campsite between Atherton and Yungaburra. Really nicely set out near a creek. Heaps of wildlife around, in the evenings they have a wildlife feeding session where there is a feeding table and the pademelons and possums come to get food. Even in the actual campsite we had bandicoots wandering around our feet outside the caravan.

They have a lovely walk along the river where you can watch the platypus swimming around. A very relaxing place which we used as a base for our day trips.

Crystal Caves, Atherton

What a surprise this place was. From the outside it looked like a regular tourist shop but once inside you had the option to go on a tour.
We did.

The place was built by Rene Boissevain in 1987, to house his extensive collection of crystals and fossils. His love of crystals and fossils
started in 1963 when he found a massive Agate Nodule near Forsayth. He then travelled the world in search of crystals, gemstones and fossils.

He is obviously a very eccentric guy, I mean who else builds a series of tunnels and caves under their shop using polyurethane expanding foam! It does work very well though. You go down this very low ceiling ramp to find room after room of fossils and gemstones. You are given a headlamp and everywhere you turn there is another gemstone. It is really brilliant. One of the Amethyst Geodes is 3.2m tall and is amazing. We spent ages exploring.

Upstairs you can buy samples from $5 to $14,000. Or you can crack open your own geode. A very enjoyable couple of hours and I don’t even like rocks!
