The Kimberley

From Broome we went on a cruise in a catamaran to see the Kimberley. The company was Odyssey Expeditions and I could not fault them. There were 19 guests and 5 crew members who made the trip very special. We went up around Cape Leveque which was the only bit that I took sea sickness tablets, as you all know I am not a big boat person. After that it was great because we were always in sheltered inlets of the Kimberley. We had a full itinerary which included fishing, mud crabbing, Horizontal Falls, Montgomery Reef, several swimming holes, beach bonfire, several Indigenous Art sites both Wadjina and Bradshaw and waterfalls.  It was the most amazing trip the scenery was spectacular, sunsets and sunrises were brilliant and the crocodiles and sharks who loved to circle the boat at night were great to watch.

The highlight for me was Montgomery Reef and the fishing. At full tide you cannot see the reef  but as the tide goes out the water that flows off it is like white water and the turtles have to get off. We went in a small boat up Turtle Gully and it was amazing to see. The tidal difference in the Kimberley is one of the biggest in the world up to 10 metres difference between high and low tide, that is a lot of water coming off the reef. The fishing was spectacular, neither of us usually fish. Mark the skipper would take us out in the smaller boat ‘Homer’ and we would fish using hand reels. He would find great spots. We all seemed to catch fish at the same time and it was hectic. On one fishing trip we had Golden Snappers coming in on both sides of the boat, two full eskys in less than half an hour, and you would have to reel in as fast as possible before the sharks would come and try and take them off your hook. Very exciting. We did catch a few small sharks accidentally which we had to put back.  If there were too many sharks we had to move on.

We cruised as far as Prince Frederick Harbour where we got picked up by helicopter off the beach (very James Bond) and flew over Mitchell Falls. I am not a fan of helicopters especially when they swoop down over the falls. Simon of course loved it. We then flew to the Mitchell Plateau airfield which comprised of a  tiny hut and a dirt airstrip. We had to get in this tiny single propellor Cessna for 4 people. Simon was in the front with the pilot. This was a great way to see all the places we had been over the last 9 days from the air.

It truly was a fantastic holiday would thoroughly recommend to anyone
