Charlotte Plains Artesian Springs, Cunnamulla

Saw our fist wild emus on the way here, must have passed at least 20 of them in total. It’s quite upsetting how much roadkill there is we reckon we see a dead kangaroo every minute. There are so many and you have to watch out as some of them are big so you have to go around them. Stayed at Charlotte Plains Artesian Springs. This is a family owned and operated sheep farm that has naturally hot Artesian Springs on their property. Hot Artesian Springs are natural hot springs that occur when water is heated deep within the earth and rises to the surface under pressure. The high temperature and mineral content of the water has a relaxing effect on the muscles and supposedly can also help improve circulation and soothe joint pain. I can vouch for them being very relaxing!

The bore was first sunk in 1892 and since then it has never stopped flowing, which is no wonder as it makes use of water from the great artesian basin that covers nearly a fifth of all Australia (which makes it the largest and deepest in the world). The bore pipe is at the top of the camp with two big pools where you can float about and then the hot water runs down forming a creek of very warm water. They have baths scattered along the creek that you can use. The ones nearest the bore are 42 degrees which was too hot for some but not for me I love hot baths, and then they get cooler as you move down stream.  Very relaxing, we were having 3 baths a day. You can smell the sulphur but nowhere near as strong as the Japanese Onsens.

Just make sure you remove your silver jewellery as the water can cause discolouration, the sulphur combines with the silver and produces sulphide. This creates a layer of black on the silver.
